About Mount Carmel School

Mount Carmel School, Dhupguri is a Catholic Institution founded in 2001 and is under the Management of the Discalced Carmelite Fathers (OCD) in the Diocese of Jalpaiguri. Mount Carmel School is a Learning House which has Christ as its central motivating force. It was founded and will remain a centre for educating and training pupils irrespective of religion, caste and colour. From the very beginning the education is characterized by thoroughness, high principles and freedom. The students are helped to grow in responsibility, selfreliance and human maturity so that they find meaning and purpose in their life and is inspired to live and work for the building up of a just and fraternal society. Hence the idea of service is set before the pupils who are trained to be concerned for others, to be aware of their needs, and to make sacrifices when necessary, to share what they have with the less privileged.

In the year 1987 the diocese of Jalpaiguri purchased the present property of Mount Carmel School. Meanwhile the Carmelite Fathers of the South Kerala Province (OCD Order of Discalced Carmelites) had begun their work in West Bengal. When Bishop James Toppo learned that the Carmelite Friars have opened their mission in the Archdiocese of Kolkata, invitation was sent to take up the school and other undertakings in his diocese. The Provincial Rev. Fr. Xavier Jayaraj OCD considered the matter as an obligation and sent Fr. Albert Peter OCD to discover the possibilities of setting up a Carmelite centre in Jalpaiguri diocese. After four days of journey from Kerala, Fr. Albert reached Dhupguri -“The House of Light” on 20th February 1998. The centre was officially inaugurated by Very Rev. Fr. Xavier Jayaraj, the Provincial in the presence of His Excellency Bishop James Toppo on 20th September 2001. Thus the primary school started by the diocesan priests came under the management of the Carmelite Fathers. In the following year Fr. Albert Peter OCD built a small primary school in the very same place of the present school to accommodate at least 60 to 70 students. The foundation stone of the present school building was laid in 2001 and when the ground floor was ready for use the regular classes were shifted to the new building, thanks to the generous support of Manos Unidas, Spain. At present the school is affiliated to CISCE, New Delhi (ICSE & ISC).

THE CARMELITES IN INDIA

During the early 17th century, the reformed (Discalced) Carmelites of Sts. Teresa and John of the Cross came to the Middle East and India. The first Carmelites reached the shores of India in the year 1619 in Goa. The marked catholic presence in the western coast of India, from Kerala to Gujarat, is greatly due to the work of the Carmelites. The First Novitiate of OCD Friars in India, in recent memory, was opened in 1928. Today there are 7 Provinces and 3 Regional Vicariates in India with over 1100 professed members. There are along with friars 33 Cloistered Carmelite Monasteries of nuns who spend their entire life enclosed within the cloistered walls away from the noisy and selfish world of today. There they witness to us the beautiful side of Christianity. There are almost 30,000 secular Carmel members spread throughout India, who live their calling, motivated by sound principles of Carmelite spirituality and Christian holiness......Read More
